Highland County, in the rugged Allegheny Mountains, was formed in 1847
from Bath and Pendleton Counties, and founded by Scottish, Irish and German
settlers to the region. The county encompasses 416 square miles of spectacular
mountain terrain and received its name from its prevailing high altitude.
Today, Highland County is often times referred to as Virginia's Little
Switzerland.
Highland County has a rich and historic tradition. During the American
Civil War, The Battle of McDowell was waged in Highland County, made famous
by Stonewall Jackson's 1862 Campaign. The town of McDowell hosts the re-enactment
of this battle every other year. Monterey, the county seat, was established
in 1848.
Highland County is also rich in its natural resources, and agriculture
plays a major role in its economy. You can visit many sugar camps throughout
the county during the annual Maple Festival in the month of March. Visitors
are welcome to view the traditional and contemporary processes for making
maple syrup.
Bull Pasture Mountain Ranch, a family owned and operated guest ranch,
invites you to experience the Allegheny Highlands in rustic comfort
and style.
